Commonly asked questions about Methylene Blue

What is Methylene Blue?
Methylene Blue (Methylthioninium chloride) is a non-patentable thiazine dye and backed by extensive research & use spanning over 140 years. Its use to treat malaria was pioneered by Paul Ehrlich and it continued to be used extensively until world war 2 post which it lost favor in lieu of other chemicals. It still continues to be the only known cure for cyanide poisoning and Methemoglobinemia.

Where should we buy high quality CZTL Methylene Blue?
You can purchase Methylene Blue on www.cztl.bz. Our products are tested for heavy metals and we ship the products with the certificate of analysis.

Should I purchase powder or liquid Methylene Blue?
Powder Methylene Blue works out to be cheaper than liquids due to a variety of reasons including shipping, packaging and handling. So if you are ready to prepare the concentration yourself, powder will work out to be better. Also, powder can be stored for 3 years and since we ship in multiples of 1 gram, it does make handling very easy as you only need to mix what you plan to use.

However, if you need the convenience of a readymade solution, then liquids are better.

 Other General Questions

Why is Methylene Blue non-patentable?
Methylene Blue was synthesized 146 years (1876 AD) ago by Heinrich Caro, a German chemist. Most patents are valid only for 20 years after filing (there is no record of MB being patented).

Without getting into complexities of patent law, once the process to synthesize becomes common knowledge & it crosses the 20 year period post discovery, a product cannot be patented.

You could get around it in theory, by adding some excipients to the composition of MB and marketing it as a new product.

For example, you could add calcium. e.g. Methylene Blue (99.99%) + Calcium (0.01%) and call the product MethylCalcioBlue (i.e. some random name) and patent it as a special formulation to get around this.

However Methylene Blue in its original form cannot be patented since its discovery has crossed the original 20 year period and its synthesis is common knowledge (in some way similar to how you cannot patent water but you could in principle patent sparkling water).

How do I distinguish USP grade Methylene Blue vs Non USP Grade Methylene Blue?
The easiest is to ask for the COA and check with the supplier if the manufacturing facilities are ISO/GMP compliant. Also, ask the supplier if it complies with USP standards.

If you have access to the powder form of the product, a visual inspection can be carried out - in powder form USP grade is bronze with a slight shine while non USP grade tend to be brick red in color.
